The name of the career is web DESIGNER, not web DEVELOPER. Graphic designers don’t necessarily do printing, or typesetting, they will do the packaging as required, but generally they are not burning the plates or running the presses, so why is web any different? Obviously if you’re going to freelance you will need to know how to code unless you’re going to outsource the work. But this you’re not a real( insert job here ) argument is completely asinine. Ego stroking to elevate their role, plain and simple. If you want a developer hire a developer, a designer a designer, sounds pretty simple to me.

In reply to Steve. Cool. Yes of course if designers should Coding Part. If they working with developers they should know the coding. I agree Steve Comment all designers could code at least on a rudimentary level.

In a perfect world, I wouldn’t go beyond Photoshop comps. But in my experience, agencies seem to prefer someone who can do it all. At minimum, you will need intermediate HTML and CSS skills in addition to great design skills. But since firms focus on value for the money the bucks and the jobs go to those who also know basic JavaScript, JQuery and PHP, along with familiarity with SEO and User Experience and Social Media.

I’m glad that you are “man” enough to admit that you are a designer and not a coder. There is still a market for what you do and there is a plethora of coding geniuses at you disposal if you need a partner. My best wishes to you.
