Hi Dawn,
This a common problem with the small companies because they do not have the budget and work load that allows them to hire a person for each task.

I agree. Many companies that say Graphic design in their job description want you to anything and everything except Gaphic Design. I wish it was a clearer and more accurate description. Its so confusing. I applied for a Graphic Design job one time which posted the skills for a graphic designer but when I got to the job they asked if I could work on the corporate party planning and web design.I did not say that I could or would be intrested in these things when hired. I was told that I would primarily be working on logo design and print work.

I agree with you Gavin that there are many companies that do a lot of wrong action when posting job opening, but since they are the money owners, no one can blame them. They add wrong jobs, imaginary requirements and some time bad directions. this seems to be very frustrating because job seekers takes a lot of time and effort to apply for the job and hold expectations toward this job to apply in a fake job.

The real truth about the digital design industry is that its a saturated market. Its a joke. Companies are making fortunes out of learning this stuff but the reality is that the student is likely to end up on the dole queue than in a graphics job. Most jobs advertised on general job sites do not exist. Recruitment companies swarm job sites with jobs that don't exist. They just want to collate a high volume of cvs for other purposes. Most of the designers that are in the industry were from the pre dot com crash. They exercise ridiculous demands for skills when in there day just knowing a bit of HTML landed them a job. Most new designers get there foot in the door by having a buddy who works in the company regardless of how good they are. These are some but not all the hidden truths for newbie designers.

I totally agree with you and I believe that the school or the university is actually providing the solid background. It cannot change its syllabus every couple of months to move parallel with the technology change. Thus, I believe that while the university study is important, self-teaching your self is more important in the technology and design field.
